A few tips from downsizers to friends who temporarily moved out of state.
Hey, y’all. Quick follow-up on your upcoming move.
Initial thoughts for options and next steps:
- Trash – Items of little or no value
- Donate – What others may want
- Sell – Valuables with good return
- Store – What remains short-term
- Transport – Move it all now/later
This comes down to what is of value to you and the bulk of items to handle to determine options and make plans for your move.
The following three scenarios seem most practical.
All Goes In-or-On the Car
Mattress on top of the car is a given. Store other “keeper” stuff at your home hub and toss anything else that doesn’t fit in the back of your car. Get-r-dun!
Moving Truck + Car Dolly
If there’s more you want/need in Orlando, you can rent a truck and tow the car to Florida. You’ll most spend a bit up-front and defer extra long-term cost, hassles, and headaches from another storage unit.
If you can’t go the fit-it-all-on-or-in-your-car scenario, this seems the best next option. You’ll still be one-n-done with Florida and won’t have extra monthly fees for out-of-area storage and a nuisance trip in your future.
We’ve done that… a lot… and it sucks!
Leave it in Stor-lando!
Now, if you can’t take everything you want/need to keep in your car and can’t afford the moving truck now, I’d suggest you rent a local storage unit ASAP.
You’ll then just pack, prep, and move everything to storage except what you must bring now. You have a storage unit full of stuff you can access as needed for furniture and other ol’ faves while saving money monthly once you vacate the storage unit.
In this scenario, you’d return to Orlando by plane and return via rental vehicle. Minivans and moving trucks cost about the same, so you’ll want to rent something small in advance for any runaround before returning to your home hub.
In the end, this seems simplest now. However, I think this is a short term deferral of a much larger outlay of future time, money, and stress.
The Clock’s Tickin’…
Best I can figure given what we know from y’all. The more you address now the happier you’ll be when it comes time to pass over the keys and hit the road in a couple of weeks.
Hope this helps. Have a great day!
