Our client considered buying plans, but was concerned about his ability to adapt the plans to meet his own needs.
Seth’s want for a bit of reimagining begged the question:
Well… What would you change?
He had a few structural changes he wanted to make, and I suggested that — while the plans could be adjusted — he might do better to start from scratch. If you’re only going to build one tiny home in your life, why not make it exactly the way you want it.
And so began our close working relationship while building a great friendship.
Seth Top 10 Green Building Goals
Here are some of his initial goals, and ways we agreed to meet them together in his finished tiny house:
- Carbon Footprint – Minimizing waste means maximizing materials
- Energy Efficiency – SIP walls and roof with high-efficiency windows
- Power Consumption – Active solar and wind generation
- Rainwater Catchment – Water filtering makes rain drinkable
- Off Grid – Minimal need to be connected to “shore power”
- Road Ready – Dual 7,500 pound axles support his home
- Out-of-Pocket – Low total cost to be debt- and mortgage-free
- Bookshelves – Seth’s house is built around his bookshelves
- Room for 2 – Seth and his girlfriend share the space
- DIY Capability – Self-built with “mentoring” as needed
More to come about this, our first full-size tiny house project.
